On a recent visit to Abernethy Forest in the Scottish Highlands, I came across a number of specimens of tooth fungi (Hydnellum sp.).
According to 'Mushrooms' by Roger Phillips, at least four different species of Hydnellum occur in Scottish pine woods. As I am still very much a novice when it comes to identifying fungi, I couldn't decide whether I was looking at several different species or the same species at different stages in its development!
Beatifully gruesome. Fungi are one of the reasons I like autumn. (One of many reasons why I like autumn!)
