Yesterday I paid another visit to the Plantlife nature reserve at Deep Dale in Derbyshire.
The lower parts of the dale were covered in a violet-blue haze of devil's-bit scabious. Butterflies, bees and other nectar-feeding insects seem to find the flowers irresistible. I counted 15 red admirals on one patch!
Other species of butterfly visiting the flowers included peacock, meadow brown, small copper and dark green fritillary.
