Yet another wet and blustery day.
This morning Liz and I caught the bus out to Low Bradfield, then walked around Agden Reservoir. The weather didn't look too bad when we left the house but the rain soon set in. The paths were awash with water and mud.
Thanks to the rain, there wasn't a lot of wildlife to be seen. However, I did manage to add another bird to my Bigby list: pochard. We spotted three russet-headed drakes amongst the mallards on the western arm of the reservoir.
The rain gradually petered out in the afternoon. We walked homewards along the bank of Damflask Reservoir, full to the brim after weeks of wet weather. The overflow channel at the eastern end of the reservoir looked and sounded spectacular - a cascade of water thundering down into the Loxley Valley.
Heavy rain is forecast for tonight and tomorrow, so I won't be surprised if the River Loxley bursts its banks - especially where the channel is still choked with debris from last June's floods.
As we approached the triangular dam at Loxley Fisheries we had an excellent view of a kingfisher (sorry Pete!). We actually saw it dive and catch a small fish - a lovely sight on such a grey day.
At Old Wheel Dam I picked up another Bigby tick: coot. There was no sign of the goldeneyes that we saw there two weeks ago.
