This photo is my contribution to the Window On Your World experiment run by the PM programme on BBC Radio 4. Click on the picture to see a larger version.
The programme's presenter Eddie Mair invited listeners to send in photos of whatever they could see at 5pm on 5 December 2006. You can find some of the other contributions here.
I found this an interesting challenge. Due to a busy schedule, I wasn't exactly sure where I would be at 5pm, but there was a good chance that I would be passing through the centre of Sheffield. I knew it would be dark, so I packed my lightweight tripod as well as my camera.
At about 4.50pm I got off the bus near the BBC's Sheffield studios. I had an idea: I could take a photo of the illuminated clock outside the studio building... but, unfortunately, I found that it wasn't illuminated on this particular occasion.
As the minutes ticked away I picked my way through the ever-changing obstacle course outside Sheffield station. The moon was rising over Park Hill Flats, providing a perfect backdrop to the rush-hour chaos.
In a flash of inspiration, I spotted an ideal vantage point outside entrance to the Showroom Cinema. I very nearly didn't get there in time thanks to the numerous barriers designed to corral pedestrians and steer them away from the roadworks.
STOP PRESS: You now can see my picture on the PM blog gallery.
You could see that?!
Wow. I'll have some of whatever you're having.

Wow, your contribution is far from mundane, and the forethought really paid off.
