At this time of year, I find myself looking for any small sign that winter is loosening its grip - the slightest hint that spring is on its way.
As darkness fell around 5 o'clock this afternoon, a blackbird was singing hesitantly from the birch tree in our back garden. I paused to listen and also picked up the distant sound of a song thrush in full flow.
It won't be long now...

I take my dog for a walk about 7 am each morning. For many weeks now the only bird sounds have been Blackbird alarm calls when we get too close or the occasional call of owls. This morning for the first time this year there were several birds singing. A couple of days ago, when we came back from the afternoon walk, there was a Robin sat on a tall tree stump singing so loudly it was almost deafening. Spring is on its way.

The great tits, coal tits and dunnocks have been singing for a while near me, and the song thrushes recently started piping up. I had a drumming GSW on Loxley Common as far away as the end of Dec, and today I got my first singing blackbird on the roof of work.
